Marco
Testa sings live! (JMR1997)
L’album

The
phrasing refinement, the precious pathos, the heat in all the range of the
baritone voice, but with strong high notes, confirm Marco Testa like precious
male voice of the contemporary jazz. The album (very 74 minutes of music, 17
tunes, 10 different musicians
involved) live recorded, gives back to emotional the immediacy and the
intensity of interpretation in performing some classics, all with originals
arrangements by the singer, the jazz, the bossa nova, two songs more in acid
jazz style (recorded before it exploded and become trivial as an easy trend)
and one beautiful italian author song, also rearranged in a rarefied
atmosphere, and hosting the trumpet player Giorgio LiCalzi. The band
that has played in the most part of the recordings, is constituted from three
musicians well kwown for the long activity that they have carried out as soloist,
and in the sub valued, but often more deserving, role of sidemen of other
prestige soloist: Stefano Maccagno, pianista to the limits of the
virtuosismo, classic formation and jazz passion; Stefano Risso,
young double bass player but of
remarkable musicality; Paolo Narbona, endowed drummer of great
versatility that allows him to pass easier between the more various musical
kinds. The tunes of the cd are: 1.
Round about
midnight, the
melting ballad of Thelonious Monk, a tune that is a jazz symbol, sung with
the added particularity of the strophe introduction
and the coda 2.
Shiny
Stockings, swing
and scat in a version Count
Basie style 3.
One for my
Baby, a
classic for a crooner, which, here, a little ironically pines… 4.
Crystal
silence, the
splendid song from Chick Corea in a original tempo in 5/4 5.
Just in Time, dry, incisive, with cool
beat 6.
The Island the modern melodic genius
of Ivan Lins who reinterpreted bossa nova style 7.
Black coffee the fascination of a
bluesy atmosphere, a little bit
“maudit” 8.
Naima one of the masterpieces from
John the Coltrane, musician symbol of the estetic/estatic research in music
in an intense arrangement in slow afro jazz with remarkable growing 9.
Lonesome Lover
blues that
by now it can be considered as classic of the vocalist, especially in live
performing 10.
Berimbau a samba from the chasing
rhythm of Baden a Powell, with the magic touch of the classic guitar of
Silvano Biolatti 11.
and 12 Once I loved and A felicidade the two
immortal themes of Antonio
Carlos Jobim, where the voice make itself winning and rich of saudade. 11.
This
Masquerade with
the low electrical worker of Benny Pizzutto in pregevole single slap. 12.
Afro blue Mongo Santamaria in
percussive arrangement (with Marco Testa playing congas!) executed from the
Marco Testa Real Estate quartet formed by very good soloists: Marco
Tardito sax, Guido Canavese electric piano, Alessandro Maiorino electric
bass, Alessandro Minetto drums 13.
Caravan Duke Ellington twisted by
funk of the Real Estate (it was just 1991 and equal the proportions between
acid beat and harmonic-melodic
richness of jazz) 15.
Almeno tu
nell’universo a melodic
theme of rare beauty wtote by Maurizio Fabrizio, than doesn’t have nothing to
envy to many jazz ballads, with the particularitity of intro with two
doublebasses played with bow (domestic recording.) 16.
Bye bye blues final hug in turbinate of
drums and with a solo voice Notes by Roberto
Levis The evocative black and
white of the cover photo is by Alessandro Albert |
